The 1850 Codex: Boston, Massachussets
In May and June of 2008 (in association with Tom Zilian of Signature Surfaces), Isaac and I completed a month long project reclaiming concrete floors at the 1850 Condominiums. This project required artistic problem solving within an extremely compressed period of time. Isaac and I resided on site during the entire period. After the completion of each grueling day, we retired to our elementary digs and cranked out paintings and drawings on paper.
I was reading, The Science of Leonardo: Inside the Mind of the Great Genius of the Renaissance by Fritjof Capra. Inspired by Capra’s insights into the absence of barriers between the ‘disciplines’ as practiced by Da Vinci, and attempting to work beyond my exhaustion, I managed a foray into a fantasy of my own contrivance. Sepia tones, red wine, faux mechanics, Louis Armstrong, and a tip of Jimmy Hatlo’s hat.
Included in the slideshow below are representations of that effort. The 1850 Codex.
