Prayer Wall Sculpture

While surveying the hospital courtyard in terms of its composition, it became apparent to me that there rose up a brick wall that loomed over the space like a monolithic giant. I instinctively felt that there needed to be a way to soften this imposing edifice and visually connect the adjoining walls of glass.

I also considered that there might be those who would allow themselves to be intimidated by the practice of walking the labyrinth.

That might not require, nor be capable of the movement.
I thought of the myriad of emotions associated with Hospice. With the hospital setting. The anticipation of good news. The dread of bad. Joy. Anger. Relief and release. Acceptance and denial. I thought that these human emotions should not be confined. That they should fly up and out into the rest of the world.

A prayer wall.

Since the conception of this project, Linda Matney, Kim Darden, and Kathy Brown have once again cast forth their formidable efforts to bring this sculpture forward. A diverse prayer wall ministry, which includes social workers, bereavement counselors, and chaplains, has organically emerged to act as stewards – gathering up prayer concerns and taking them (anonymously) into the greater community.
Making them concrete.

The Arts & Science Council, Arts in Healthcare Initiative, represented by Regina Smith, provided a generous grant for the construction and installation of the Prayer Wall.
